School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Girls'Day - April 25, 2024

Girls do research at the school of mathematics and natural sciences

The departments Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science are opening their doors to interested girls in grades 8-10 on Girls'Day 2024.

What you can expect:

We offer three programs.

1. discover the fascinating world of physics! From the laws of nature to particle physics and building a pinhole camera!  Register here

2 . hands-on math and computer science: Practical experiments and games with algorithms and artificial intelligence! Register here

3 . discover the world of chemistry: experiments on energy, sustainability and food! Register here

Below you can see what the departmental groups have planned..

General schedule

You start at 8:15 in the morning (please note: the physics group starts at 8:00). You will be greeted by members of the mathematics and natural sciences staff. After a short introduction, you will then move on to the different departmental groups.

Afterwards, a quiz round with the student council awaits you and we invite you to have lunch together with students and staff of the BUW in the university cafeteria. Finally, we will all meet again in the lecture hall for a short feedback session and you will receive your certificate of participation. The event ends around 2:30 pm.

Information on the offers of the specialist groups

1. physics

We will pick you up at the main entrance of the university and you will go straight to an experimental physics lecture on the acoustics of musical instruments. At 10 a.m. you'll have breakfast in the student lab and get some information about the study programme. Then it's time for the project work: you can choose one of four working groups to experiment on the following topics:

  • cloud chamber
  • Filament beam tube
  • Electron microscope
  • Building a pinhole camera and photo shoot

2. mathematics and computer science

If you find mathematics and/or computer science exciting, fun or challenging, then you've come to the right place!

Because we'll tell you how you can continue with these subjects after school, what you can do in such a course and what paths you can take after graduation. Computer science and mathematics offer an incredible number of opportunities for exciting careers!

Specifically, we want to do the following with you:

  1. We'll start with a round of introductions. We are curious about your experiences with and expectations of mathematics and computer science and will tell you why we find these subjects so interesting and where they are used in our everyday lives. We'll also give you a little preview of what a day at the university looks like and how it differs from a normal day at school.
  2. Then we go into practice. We prepared various experiments and games that show how algorithms and formulas can be used: Experience the challenges of artificial intelligence by, for example, recognizing inaccuracies in AI-generated images and distinguishing them from real photos or use your moves to trick a program that is supposed to recognize different postures. Develop tactics to plan the shortest round trip to visit all your relatives or make decisions under uncertainty. Also test your skills in various combinatorial games.

3. chemistry

Do you want to understand the building blocks that make up your environment, how new materials and medicines are made, what your food actually contains, what happens in our atmosphere and how to develop alternative, renewable raw materials? Then chemistry is the right place for you.

In our program...

  • We clarify the questions: What can you expect when studying chemistry? What courses do we offer here at the University of Wuppertal? What is studying and working in chemistry like? What are the requirements for studying?
  • Our staff will take you into the laboratory, where experiments on energy and light await you. You can conduct your own experiments, discover chemical relationships and talk to students about everyday life at the university.
